Why compress images

Image compression reduces file size while maintaining acceptable visual quality. Large image files slow down websites, consume mobile data, fill up storage, and may be rejected by email attachments or upload forms that have file size limits. Most platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, email services, and government portal upload forms have maximum file size limits. Compressed images load faster on web pages, improving user experience and SEO rankings.

Types of image compression

Lossy compression (used by JPEG) permanently removes some image data to achieve smaller file sizes. The amount of data removed is controlled by a quality setting — higher quality means larger file size. Lossless compression (used by PNG) reduces file size without removing any data, meaning the image can be perfectly reconstructed. JPEG is best for photographs. PNG is best for screenshots, logos, and images with text. WebP is a modern format that offers better compression than both JPEG and PNG.

Image size requirements for common platforms

WhatsApp compresses images further when shared, but sending smaller files uses less data. Government portals in Pakistan (FBR, NADRA, SECP) typically require document images under 1 MB or 2 MB. CNIC scan for digital applications: under 200 KB JPG at 300 DPI minimum. Job application photos: usually under 50 KB for passport-size images. University application scans: 50 to 200 KB per page. Online store product images: 100 to 500 KB for fast loading.

How much can you compress an image

A raw photograph from a modern smartphone camera at full resolution is typically 3 to 8 MB. Compressing to 80 percent quality typically reduces this to 300 to 800 KB while maintaining excellent visual quality. At 60 percent quality, you get 150 to 400 KB with slight degradation only visible at full zoom. For web use, 50 to 80 percent quality at appropriate dimensions is generally optimal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my image uploaded to a server? No. This compressor runs entirely in your browser. Your image never leaves your device.

Can I compress a PDF? For PDF compression, use the separate Compress PDF tool which handles PDF-specific compression techniques.

What is the best format for WhatsApp? JPEG is ideal for photos shared on WhatsApp. Keep file size under 1 MB for faster sending and to avoid WhatsApp's own (often lower quality) recompression.
