How to add page numbers to a PDF

Adding page numbers to a PDF makes long documents navigable and professional. It is essential for reports, theses, legal documents, contracts, and any multi-page document that will be printed or shared. Page numbers let readers reference specific pages in discussion, citation, or review.

Page number position options

Bottom center is the most common position for formal documents like reports and theses. Bottom right or left is preferred for books and publications. Top center or top corners are used for legal documents where footers are reserved for confidentiality notices.

Starting number options

Most documents start at 1. If your PDF is a continuation of a larger document, set the starting number to continue from where the previous section ended. This is useful when assembling multi-chapter documents from separate PDF files.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I skip page numbers on the first page? Start numbering from 0 — page 1 will show 0, page 2 will show 1, etc. This effectively unnumbers the first (cover) page visually.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server? No. Everything runs in your browser. Your file is never uploaded anywhere.

Can I add Roman numerals? Currently only Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3) are supported.
