Work out the final price after a discount, or figure out what percentage off you actually got in any currency.

How to calculate a discount

A discount is a reduction from the original price of a product or service. To calculate the discounted price, multiply the original price by the discount percentage and divide by 100 to find the savings amount, then subtract from the original price. Alternatively, multiply the original price by (1 minus the discount percentage divided by 100). A 30 percent discount on Rs 5,000 saves Rs 1,500 leaving a final price of Rs 3,500.

Sale season discounts in Pakistan

Major sale seasons in Pakistan include Eid sales (before Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha), summer clearance sales, winter clearance sales, and 11.11 (November 11) and Black Friday promotions on e-commerce platforms like Daraz. Fashion retailers, electronics chains, and grocery stores all run discount campaigns. Always verify the pre-discount price — some retailers inflate the "original price" to make the discount appear larger than it actually is.

Stacked discounts — how they work

Stacked or sequential discounts apply one after another, not combined. A 20 percent discount followed by an additional 10 percent does not equal 30 percent off. Instead: on a Rs 10,000 item, 20 percent off gives Rs 8,000. Then 10 percent off Rs 8,000 gives Rs 7,200. The total saving is Rs 2,800 which is 28 percent off the original — not 30 percent. This distinction matters when comparing multiple discount offers.

Online shopping discounts vs in-store prices

E-commerce platforms like Daraz often run time-limited flash sales with genuine discounts. Compare prices across platforms before purchasing. Browser extensions and apps can track price history to verify whether a sale price is genuinely lower than the usual selling price. Look for coupon codes, bank card offers (specific bank cards offer additional 5 to 15 percent cashback), and loyalty points that can reduce effective price further.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the original price from a discounted price? Divide the sale price by (1 minus the discount percentage divided by 100). If an item costs Rs 3,500 after a 30 percent discount, the original price was Rs 3,500 ÷ 0.70 = Rs 5,000.

What is the difference between discount and cashback? A discount reduces the price upfront at the point of sale. Cashback is a refund of a percentage of the purchase price that arrives after the purchase — often as credit to a wallet or bank account, not instant cash.
